It was first published in 1973, and translated into English, and French, the following year. While serving as a Captain in the Red Army during World War II, Solzhenitsyn was arrested by SMERSH and sentenced to eight years in the GULAG and then internal exile for criticizing Josef Stalin in a private letter. After this he had to publish in the West, most notably Cancer Ward (1968), August 1914 (1971), and The Gulag Archipelago (1973). Solzhenitsyn was awarded the 1970 Nobel Prize in Literature "for the ethical force with which he has pursued the indispensable traditions of Russian literature". Solzhenitsyn writes The Gulag Archipelago in hiding in Estonia in 1967. An assassination attempt by the KGB in 1971 is followed two years later by the government's seizing of his archive, including the manuscript of Gulag.

Aleksandr Isajevitj Solzjenitsyn, född 11 december 1918 i Kislovodsk, död 3 augusti 2008 i Moskva, var en rysk författare, historiker och tidigare sovjetisk dissident. Solzhenitsyn's first wife, Natalya Reshetovskaya, seems to confirm the fact that “Gulag Archipelago” consists a fictional and completely non-scientific book.
